Aleksandra Ganeva: this episode is a little different. I want to tell you a story about a man from Yorkshire who changed the way humans think about the rooms they live in. About the idea that furniture shouldn't just be functional, that it should fit. Not just physically fit the space, but suit it, belong to it, be made for it, as if it couldn't have existed anywhere else. But before I get into it, I want to say something directly. This episode is For the people who understand that a piece of work Well made furniture is not just an object, it's an argument about proportion, about time, about care. For the people who look at a room and see not what's there but what it could be, who understand that a drawer should slide like it means it, that a joint well made will outlast the people who made it. let's go back to 1753, to a street in London, to a workshop where something extraordinary was about to begin. I'm Alexandra, welcome to the Hidden Life of Things, Everyday History for anyone who's ever looked at something ordinary and wondered, how did this actually get here? Understand what Thomas Chippendale changed, you need to understand what furniture was before him. And the answer for most of human history is purely functional. Things to sit on, things to store things in, things to sleep on, to eat from, to work at. The idea that furniture should be beautiful as well as useful existed. Wealthy households had always commissioned better-made, more decorated pieces, but the concept of designed furniture, furniture that was conceived as part of a coherent aesthetic vision for a specific room, barely existed. Before the mid-18th century, If you needed a chest of drawers or a cabinet or a set of chairs, you went to your local joiner. The joiner, a skilled craftsperson, but primarily a practical one, would build you what you needed based on established forms. A chest of drawers looked like a chest of drawers. A table looked like a table. There were regional variations, there were gradations of quality, there were degrees of decoration, but the idea of a designer, someone who would think about your room as a whole, who would proportion pieces to suit the specific dimensions. and light and character of the space who would give you something made to fit not just the floor but the eye. that idea did not yet exist. Furniture was made, it was not in the modern sense designed. was also a sharp division between the people who made things and the people who commissioned them. The aristocracy and the wealthy had always been able to get fine work done, but the process was direct. You described what you wanted. A craftsperson built it. The idea of a creative intermediate A designer with a vision, with a philosophy, with a body of work that clients could browse and select from was completely new. Thomas Chippendale was born into this world and proceeded to invent a completely different one. He was baptized on the 5th of June 1718 in Otley, Yorkshire, a market town in the west riding surrounded by moorland and stone walls. His father was a joiner, his grandfather was a carpenter. The Chippendales were a woodworking family, and Thomas grew up with timber in his hands from the beginning, understanding grain and joint and the specific resistances of different species before he had language for any of it. Almost nothing is known. Of his early years. He appears in the historical record only when he moves to London around 1748 and marries. But those early decades, the years we can't see, were clearly where the foundation was laid. The knowledge of how wood works, how joints bear load, how a cabinet must be constructed to resist the stresses of opening and closing, and the fluctuation of temperature and humidity across a you don't develop that knowledge from books, you develop it from years of working, of watching. Of getting things wrong and understanding why. London in the mid 18th century was the most commercially and culturally vibrant city in the world. The population was growing, the merchant class was expanding. New money was building new houses and furnishing them. And St. Martin's Lane, the street where Chapeneur would establish his workshop in 1753, was in the furniture world something like a golden mile. Every significant cabinet maker in London was either on it or within a few streets of it. It was, as one historian, Described it, the Silicon Valley of 18th-century furniture making, the place where ambition and skill and patronage moved to number 59 to 61. He had around 50 craftsmen working for him. He had a showroom where could come and see examples of his work. He had a workshop where that work was made, and he had an idea that would change everything. In April 1754, Thomas Chippendale published a book, not a novel, not a treatise on philosophy or politics or religion, the forms of writing that carried weight in the 18th century, a book of furniture designs, 160 engraved plates showing beds, chairs, tables, cabinets, bookcases, mirrors, chimney pieces, stands, canopy beds, everything a household of quality might need, drawn with precision, annotated with dimension. He called it the Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director. And it was without exaggeration the most important furniture design publication in the English language ever. On the day of publication, three hundred and thirty four copies were pre-sold to subscribers. The subscriber list is itself a remarkable document. It includes the names of the aristocracy, the wealthy landed gentry, architects and craftsmen, and the full range of the eighteenth century design conscious public. Both Catherine the Great of Russia and King Louis XVI of France earned copies. Think about that for a moment. The most powerful monarch in Russia and the King of France had copies of a Yorkshire Joyner's design book on their shelves? That is the reach this book achieved. But what made it so extraordinary wasn't just that it existed, it was what it did. The director was not a catalogue of completed pieces, it was a catalogue of possibilities. Each plate showed a design that could be made, a Bookcase of these proportions with these fittings at this scale, but their designs were also explicitly adaptable. Chippendale understood that his clients didn't just want a bookcase, they wanted a bookcase that would fit their library, their specific room, with its specific dimensions, its specific light, its particular character. The director was the first systematic attempt to give a client the tools to think about furniture not as individual objects but as components of a designed interior. Not what piece of furniture do you need, but what is this room? Trying to be? What proportions will reinforce that intention? What relationship between the furniture and the architecture will make the space feel whole? This, in its essence, exactly how a bespoke furniture designer thinks today. The room comes first, the piece serves the room. The proportions are not arbitrary. They are calculated, considered, derived from the specific dimensions and character of the space. The furniture is not placed in the room, it belongs to it. Chippendale was doing this in 1754, 270 years. before the conversations that happen in bespoke furniture workshops today. The director went through three editions. The third, published in parts between 1759 and 1762, contained two hundred plates. By this point Chippendale's name had become, as the Victoria and Albert Museum would later put it, a shorthand description for any furniture in his style, not just pieces that came from his workshop. His designs were copied, adapted, reinterpreted by cabinet makers and in the American colonies. He had essentially created a design language, a shared vocabulary for what good English furniture looked like. I want to spend some time here on the craft itself because I think the design side of Chippendale's story gets the attention and the making side, the actual physical intelligence required to execute his vision, deserves equal consideration. Building a piece of fine furniture is at its core a problem in applied mathematics and material science. And in the 18th century, you solve that problem without computers, without power tools, without standardized timber, and without the ability to control the environment in which the people Piece would eventually live. Wood moves. this is the fundamental challenge of furniture making that never goes away. Wood is not an inert material, it is hygroscopic, Which means it absorbs and releases moisture from the surrounding air. When humidity rises, wood swells. When humidity falls, wood contracts. In a room that experiences the seasonal changes of an English climate, cold, dry winters with fires burning, warm, humid summers, the same piece of timber might expand and contract by several millimeters across its width over the course of a year. A joint that ignores this reality will fail. A cabinet that doesn't accommodate wood movement will split, warp, or come apart at the seams, regardless of how fine its innuelity. Construction was. The craftspeople at Chip and Dale's workshop understood this not as a principle taught from a textbook, but as a fundamental fact of their material, learned through years of working with timber in different conditions, watching what happened, understanding why. The solution is a body of techniques developed over centuries, floating panels that are held loosely in grooves rather than fixed so they can move without stressing the surrounding frame. Dovetail joints, the classic interlocking wedge-shaped joints of drawer construction that resist pulling forces without glue alone. Quarter sewn timber. For surfaces where flatness is critical because the specific orientation of the grain relative to the saw cut affects how the board moves with moisture changes. These techniques require the craftsperson to think ahead, to anticipate the life of the piece over years and decades, to make decisions at the construction stage that would allow the piece to accommodate its own. material reality across time. A well-made 18th-century cabinet is not just an object, it is a series of considered predictions about what will happen to this wood in this environment over the next hundred years. And the best ones are still proving those predictions right today. Chippendale's workshop also worked from drawings, detailed, scaled drawings that specified proportions precisely. In the 18th century, this meant working with hand-drawn plans on paper, establishing the proportions of a piece geometrically, using the tools of classical architecture. rules of proportion derived from ancient Roman Greece to determine the relationship between heights and widths and depths. This is not intuition, this is calculation. A bookcase in the Chippendale style follows specific proportional relationships between its base and upper sections, between the height of its cornice and the height of the overall piece, between the width of the pilasters and the width of the glazed doors. These relationships were derived from the study of Roman architecture, specifically from the classical orders, the systems of proportions developed during centuries of temple and civic buildings in the ancient world. Chippendale and his contemporaries believed, as architects had believed since the Renaissance, that beauty was not arbitrary, it arose from specific mathematical relationships, and that those relationships once understood could be applied at any scale. The proportional thinking of bespoke furniture design is not a modern invention. It is the direct inheritance from the eighteenth century workshop which inherited It from the Renaissance, which inherited it from Rome, which inherited it from Greece. The concern with how a piece fits its room, with the relationship between the made object and the space it occupies, is one of the longest continuous threads in the history of design. Let me tell you about the physical reality of Chippendale's workshop because I think it's important to understand what it actually looked like and what it means that fifty craftsmen worked there. 59 to 61 St. Martin's Lane was a substantial property for the time, a combined showroom, workshop, and family at street level was where clients came to see completed pieces and to discuss commissions. The workshop behind and above were where the work happened. 50 Craftsmen is a significant Significant number. To put it in context, this was not a small operation by any 18th century standard. These were specialists, joiners who worked the basic structure, carvers who executed the decorative details, turners who produced the turning legs and columns on a lathe, guilders who applied gold leaf, upholsterers who covered the seats and padded the backs of chairs. Craftsmen who applied lacquer finishes in the Chinese style that was enormously fashionable in the mid-18th century. A single piece of complex furniture might pass through the hands of eight or ten different specialists before it was complete. The organization of this kind of workshop, managing the flow of work between specialists, ensuring quality at each stage, maintaining the intent through multiple pairs of hands, was itself a significant management challenge. Chibendel was not just a designer, he was a creative and operational director of a complex production enterprise. He also did something that would be recognized today as client relationship management He visited his clients' houses. He measured rooms. He understood the space before he proposed the This is documented in the accounts of his major commissions. Houses like Harewood House in Yorkshire, Nosto Priory, Paxton House in Scotland, Dumfries House. At each of these, Chippendale was not simply supplying furniture. He was designing complete interiors, choosing colours, specifying carpets and curtains, supervising the installation of every piece in its specific intended position. Dumfries House in Ayrshire, Scotland, is perhaps the best preserved example of a Chippendale interior anywhere in the world. When the house was at risk of being sold and its contents dispersed in 2007, the contents included a remarkable collection of original Chippendale pieces, many still in the rooms they were made for, A consortium led by the then Prince of Wales, now King Charles III, raised £45 million to acquire and preserve it. The furniture was considered inseparable from the house. The pieces belonged to the rooms Chippentale had designed them for. Moving them would have destroyed the thing they were part of. That is what Bispo means, at its fullest expression. Not just made to a client specification, made for a specific place, belonging to it in a way that makes the piece and the room a single thing. One of the things that made the director so remarkable and so widely influential was that it wasn't committed to a single style. It offered three distinct vocabularies, and the client could choose. Gothic designs drew on the pointed arches, the tracery, the vertical emphasis of medieval English architecture. In the 1750s, there was a developing interest in England's own medieval past, partly romantic, partly nationalistic, and Tippendale's gothic furniture spoke to that sensibility. Bookcases with pointed arch glazing, chairs with gothic traceries. in their bags, cabinets that look like miniature cathedral architecture. Chinese designs, what the eighteenth century called chinoiserie, were the other great fashion of the moment. Chinese porcelain had been arriving in Europe for generations, and the appetite for things that looked Chinese, or rather like the English imagined Chinese things looked, was enormous. Chippendale's Chinese designs featured fretwork patterns, pagotto-shaped canopies on beds and cabinets, carved figures and lacquered surfaces. This was not an accurate representation of Chinese design. It was a European fantasy of China filtered through 18th century English taste. But it was a beautiful fantasy. And then there was Rococo. Or what Chippendale called the modern taste. Well, Coco was the dominant decorative style of mid-18th century Europe, originating in France and characterized by asymmetry, by naturalistic curves, by a lightness and delicacy that was the opposite of the formal mathematical geometry of the preceding Baroque period. Shells and leaves and ribbons and flowers carved in high relief, asymmetrical arrangements that felt spontaneous, a sense of movement and lightness in what had Previously been static and weighty. Chippendale's particular genius was in synthesizing all three of these vocabularies, sometimes in the same piece, sometimes in the same room, and making them feel coherent. A library at Harewood might have Rococo carving on its chairbacks and gothic tracery and its bookcase glazing and Chinese fretwork on a side table, and somehow it all belonged together. This was not accidental, it was the result of a deeply developed sense of proportion and relationship that could accommodate different styles. Within unified spatial vision. This again is exactly what a skilled bespoke furniture designer does today. The client might come with influences that seem contradictory, a love of mid-century modernism and a house full of architecture, or a preference for Japanese minimalism in a Victorian terrace. The designer's task is to find the proportional and material common ground that makes those influences live together in the same space without fighting each other. Chippendale was solving this problem. in 1754. I want to dwell for a moment on something that I think is underappreciated in the way we talk about furniture and design. There is a kind of intelligence that lives in the hands, in the accumulated knowledge of how materials behave, in the understanding, not just intellectual, but physical, embodied, remembered in the muscle and fingertip of what wood will do under a plane, how a joint will move, where a drawer will bind if the clearances are wrong. This intelligence is not less than the intelligence of the historian or the theorist. It is different. It combines knowledge and judgment and physical skill in a way that takes years to develop and is very difficult to fully transmit in words. A drawing can specify dimensions. It cannot specify the feel of a correctly fitted joint. It cannot specify the moment of decision when you are planning a surface and you sense through your hands that you've reached the right place. The craftsmen of Chippendale's workshop had this intelligence. The men who carved their cocoa decoration on a chair back. the leaves and shells and ribbons, was making thousands of tiny decisions as he worked each one, requiring the integration of visual judgment, physical control and deep knowledge of how the wood would respond to the chisel at that depth, in that grain direction, at that angle. And there is something important about the permanence of well-made furniture that I want to name. A piece of furniture built with genuine care and skill, with correctly seasoned timber, with joints that accommodate movement, with a finish that protects without obscuring, does not have a predetermined lifespan. The oak furniture of the Tudor period is still around. The walnut pieces of the early 18th century are still in use. The mahogany work of Chippendale's own workshop is still in houses and museums. across Britain and America, serving the purpose it was made for two hundred and sixty years ago. There is something quietly profound about making something that might outlast your grandchildren, that carries in its grain and its joint and its proportions the intelligence and care of the person who made it. A well made piece of furniture is not just an object, it is evidence. Evidence that someone understood their material, thought carefully about what they were making, and had enough respect for the future to make it properly. This is what bespoke means at its deepest level. Not just made to measure, made to look. Yeah. Let me trace the line forward because Tippendale didn't just influence his own century. He established a tradition that is still alive today in workshops in Britain, in Scandinavia, in Japan, in the United States, wherever people still make furniture by hand, with considered design for specific spaces. The arts and crafts movement of the late 19th century, William Morris, Ernest Gimson, the Barnsley brothers was in many ways a reaction against industrial mass production, a return to the values that Chippendale's era represented. Hand craftsmanship, honest use of materials, the integrity of the joint, the idea that a beautiful object must also be soundly made. Morris's famous dictum have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful is entirely consistent with the Chippendale philosophy, even if the aesthetic was very different. The shaker furniture, tradition in America, spare, functional, exquisitely proportionate, represents another branch of the same impulse. The shaker is made for Furniture with extraordinary care because they believed that making something well was a form of prayer. The quality of the joint, the correctness of the proportion, the smoothness of the finish, these were moral qualities, not merely aesthetic ones. In Scandinavia, the mid-20th century furniture designers Hans Wegner, Finn Yule, Arn Jacobson brought together the Chippendale inheritance of careful proportional thinking with modernist simplicity in Scandinavian craft traditions. Wegner's chairs, the wishbone, the ram chair, are among the most beautiful functional objects of the 20th century. And they are beautiful for the same reason that the best Chippendale That the best Chippendale work is beautiful because the proportions are correct, because the material is respected, because the function and the form are not intention but in agreement. And today, in workshops across the world, people are still doing what Chippendale's craftsmen did: measuring rooms, drawing plans, considering the relationship between a piece and the space it will occupy, making decisions about grain and joint and proportion that will determine how a piece lives in its room for the next 50 years. The tools have changed. ⁓ Machines can cut joinery to tolerances that would astonish an eighteenth century craftsman. Computer aided design allows proportions to be tested virtually before a single piece of timber is touched. Finishes are more durable, more consistent, more predictable than their eighteenth century equivalents. But the underlying questions are identical. What is this room trying to be? What proportions would reinforce that intention? How will this piece relate to the architecture? How will it age? What will it look like in twenty cents? years when the wood has developed its patina and the joints have settled. These are Chippendale's questions. They are the questions of everyone who has ever thought seriously about the relationship between made objects and the spaces they inhabit. I want to end with a thought about what this episode has really been about. Chippendale is remembered most often for the style of his furniture, the carved mahogany, the ribbon the ribbon back chairs, the begotten canopies, and those things are real and beautiful, but what I think is his most significant contribution is the idea behind the style. The idea that a room is not a collection of individual objects, but a whole. That the relationship between the pieces, the way they address each other, the way they reinforce or contradict the architecture, the way the proportions of a chair relate to the proportions of the room matters as much as the quality of any individual piece. This is not a decorating idea, it is a philosophical one. It says that the spaces we build for ourselves should be considered, that the proportions we surround ourselves with affect how we feel in a room, how we think in it, how comfortable we are in our own homes. That living among well-proportioned things is genuinely different from living among badly proportioned ones. Even if you Can't say exactly why. That a room where the furniture fits really fits, not just physically but aesthetically, spatially, proportionally, is a room where something is right in a way that registers below conscious thought. Who studied history and then spent his career making furniture that fits rooms made to measure, bespoke, designed for specific spaces with specific people in mind, has been working in this tradition, Chippendell's tradition. The tradition that says the spaces we live in matter, that the objects we fill them with matter, and that the relationship between the two is worth thinking about carefully. This is not a small thing to have done with a working life. This episode also has another point to it. My father does design furniture and he spent his life studying and enjoying history, so this episode is also in dedication to him. So next time you sit in a room where the furniture fits, where something feels correct about the proportions, where the pieces seem to belong to their space, rather than simply occupying it, take a moment. Someone thought about that. Someone measured the room, drew a plan, considered the relationship between the height of the ceiling and the scale of the furniture, between the depth of the shelves and the width of the walls. Someone understood that a room is not a container for objects, but a whole thing. And that the objects should serve the whole. That someone is part of a tradition that goes back to a workshop. On St. Martin's Lane, to a Yorkshire joiner who looked at London's most fashionable street and decided to not just make furniture but to design it, who published a book that Catherine the Great and Louis XVI put on their shelves, who died in 1779 knowing that his name had become a synonymous. Who died in 1779, knowing that his name had become synonymous with a way of thinking about how rooms and the things in them should relate. Thomas Chippendale from Otley, who understood proportion. History isn't only in museums. Sometimes it's in the grain of a well-made drawer sliding exactly as it should.
